LyondellBasell develops WPC HDPE powder

Rotterdam, The Netherlands, Wood Plastic Composite (WPC) is a material that does not break easily, is easy to clean, has excellent weather resistance and can be easily installed. Therefore, this material has developed rapidly, especially in the decoration of walls and floors. The performance of the WPC is closely related to the quality of the plastic components. Kosche GmbH, a leading manufacturer of flat panels and products using WPC, manufactures "Kovalex" WPCs using Lupolen 5261Z high-density polyethylene (HDPE) powder from LyondellBasell. In a series of tests, compared with other traditional plastics, this resin shows excellent processing performance and excellent dimensional stability.
A homogeneous mixture of wood and plastic "In our tests, the Lupolen 5261Z powder from LyondellBasell Industries showed similar grain sizes to wood. This prompted us to make homogeneous mixtures of wood and plastic," said Wache Product Manager, Kosche Co. Ralf Hirland explained. Compared with other traditional plastics, this excellent compatibility results in high yields and very low reject rates.
The high wood content Lupolen HDPE also promoted the Kovarx company to reduce the plastic used for this mixture. "In our application, mainly in the construction industry, we provide composites with excellent properties and look and feel similar to wood," Hirland added. At the same time, Kosche uses up to 70% of the wood in its Kovalex product. According to different application requirements, HDPE content is between 25% and 45%. “We use other materials, such as PVC, because we have to reduce the wood content because of the processing difficulties of the material itself,” said Markus Petry, production manager at Kosche. The final product from this composite is 100% recyclable.
